About Winship

Accelerating discovery and hope is our life's work

As you read this, you can be certain that somewhere within Emory Winship Cancer Institute, at this very moment, people are thinking, testing, collaborating, exploring.

That's because we know that the next great discovery in cancer research and treatment could come at any time. But only if we commit ourselves, our talents and our time to making it happen.

That commitment motivates and drives the people of Winship every day. Our life's work revolves around a single ideal: to accelerate the discovery of a cure for cancer and to apply this discovery to give people hope.

What makes Winship different? In a word, focus.

As Winship is on track to become Georgia's first NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, our sights are set on how best to apply the latest findings in cancer research to the treatment of this devastating disease, not just for the future but right now. This is called translational research, a way of taking the latest discoveries and putting them to work as quickly as possible to treat people with cancer.

We maintain our focus by recruiting and retaining some of the world's most eminent researchers and physicians. These are brilliant, dedicated individuals who work in teams to explore new approaches and therapies, an effort that makes Winship Cancer Institute a "team of teams."  As an organization, we give these teams the flexibility, freedom and support to accelerate their efforts.

Emory Winship Cancer Institute is also distinguished by:

-- Our multidisciplinary approach. As part of Emory University, one of the nation's leading scientific research universities and home to the world-renowned Emory University Hospital, Winship involves experts and researchers from a wide range of disciplines. Physicians, scientists and social scientists from Emory's School of Medicine, Rollins School of Public Health and Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing all play an active role in Winship's efforts to accelerate discovery. We firmly believe that this multidisciplinary approach is our best chance at defeating cancer.

-- Our culture of caring. Winship places a high priority on embodying a "culture of caring."  We offer an array of services to patients and their families, and we pay attention to matters both large and small. This high level of support and care helps sustain positive thinking and determination, both of which are crucial in the fight against cancer.

-- Our emphasis on collaboration. Winship is a partner in the Georgia Cancer Coalition, a groundbreaking public-private partnership that unites Georgia's leading hospitals, universities, biotech firms, civic groups and non-profit and government agencies. So we share our findings and leverage the excellent work of other organizations.

-- Our world-class facility. Winship's seven-story, 280,000-square foot pavilion brings together patients with cancer, doctors, nurses and scientists, all under a single roof. It is built the way the cancer research-treatment facilities will be built in the future, serving as a "discovery accelerator" that facilitates new advances in genomics and molecular medicine.

-- Our enterprising science. Winship researchers push the limits of science. Whether pinpointing new drugs and vaccines for AIDS-related cancers or exploring the capacity of a "policing gene" that may protect against breast, ovarian and prostate cancer or undertaking clinical trials of melanoma vaccines and treatments, Winship scientists constantly strive to break new ground.

-- Our location. Winship is based in Atlanta, one of the world's most accessible international cities. We are a block away from the world headquarters of the American Cancer Society and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
