Leukemia Program
The Leukemia Program at Emory Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta, GA, is a large and diverse regionally recognized center of excellence for the management of Leukemia and Myelodysplastic Syndromes. More than 150 new cases of Leukemia and Myelodysplastic Syndromes are referred annually to the Emory Winship Leukemia Specialists clinic from Atlanta, Georgia and the greater South-Eastern region of the United States. The clinic is fully operational; a team of specialized physicians, nurse practitioners, and clinic nurses evaluate and treat more than 200 patients with Leukemia and hematological malignancies weekly. This outpatient clinic encompasses 30,000 square feet located at the plaza level of the Building C on the campus of Emory University. Winship also encompasses more than 280,000 square feet of dedicated space for basic, translational, and clinical research space, all located in the same building.
Research is a major component of the Leukemia Program, and leading-edge research is conducted daily by faculty members in a variety of areas including: development of mouse models for human leukemias, development of mouse models to test new drug therapy, and development and clinical testing of novel drugs. The adjacent offices of basic scientists and clinicians provide an excellent opportunity for formal and informal collaborations and cross-fertilization leading to innovative clinical and translational research. With this highly collaborative environment, researchers and clinicians work in the laboratory and at the bedside to ensure that patients receive the most advanced treatment available.
The outpatient pharmacy is a state-of-the-art facility staffed with three full time oncology pharmacists with access and storage space for investigational drugs. Additionally, a dedicated team of clinical research nurses, specialists in regulatory affairs and bio-informatics provide the necessary infrastructure support to the team for the development, execution, and conduct of clinical trials. This clinic is connected to the inpatient Leukemia Unit of the Emory University Hospital via an enclosed glass bridge. Therapy requiring hospitalization is administered in this 24-bed inpatient unit located on the sixth floor of the Emory University Hospital E pavilion. These in-patient beds are fully enclosed spaces with positive pressure air handling and house all Leukemia patients cared for by Winship Leukemia physicians and staff. More than 100 patients with acute leukemia, 30 of which have acute lymphoblastic leukemia and 70 acute myeloid leukemia, receive induction chemotherapy yearly in the Emory University Hospital Leukemia Unit.
The Leukemia Program's continuing laboratory and clinical research is aimed at further improving survival rates. Each new discovery carries with it the promise of enhancing treatment and ultimately saving lives. Our physicians are actively involved in the development of targeted therapy with new molecules alone or in conjunction with standard therapy. The researchers in the Leukemia Program also are investigating new combinations of drugs to increase the likelihood of complete remission and to prolong remission.
